Japan has 47 prefectures. These are the regions we know best and where our routes take you.
Hokkaido
Japan's northern island. Wide open spaces, farm country, volcanic lakes, and the best seafood. Roads are empty. Winters are harsh – summer and autumn are prime driving season.
Best: June – October
Tohoku
The northeast. Rural, quiet, and underrated. Famous for autumn colors, onsen towns, and lakes. Few tourists, great roads, honest locals.
Best: September – November
Nagano & Alps
Our home base. Mountain passes that top out above 2000m, historic post towns, and the best soba. Year-round destination.
Best: May – November
Hokuriku
The Sea of Japan coast. Traditional villages, rice terraces, and surprisingly good seafood. Less crowded than the Pacific side.
Best: April – June, September – November
Kansai
Kyoto, Osaka, Nara – and the countryside between them. Ancient temples, mountain trails, and the best food scene in Japan.
Best: March – May, October – November
Chugoku
Western Honshu. Sand dunes, sea of clouds, and the Adachi Museum gardens. Off the beaten path in the best way.

Shikoku
Japan's smallest main island. 88 temple pilgrimage route, wild coastlines, and the best udon. Cross by ferry or bridge.
Best: April – June, September – November
Kyushu
The southern island. Volcanoes, hot springs, and a distinct food culture. Fukuoka is one of Japan's most livable cities.
Best: March – May, October – November
